Taking On Water

Water is entering the hull faster than expected.

Remember: Find it. Stop it. Pump it.

  1. 1

    Find the source

Check seacocks, the stern gland, hatches, and any impact damage.

  2. 2

    Stop the flow

Close the relevant seacock or plug the hole with a bung, soft wood, or improvised material.

  3. 3

    Start pumping

Use manual and electric bilge pumps; assign a crew member to bail if needed.

  4. 4

    Reduce stress on the hull

Slow down and adjust course to ease the boat's motion.

  5. 5

    Prepare for the worst

Ready the liferaft and grab bag, and consider a PAN-PAN or MAYDAY call.

This is training guidance, not a substitute for professional rescue services. In a real emergency at sea, call the coastguard (e.g. VHF Channel 16) without delay.
