Engine Failure
The engine has stopped or will not start in a critical moment.
Remember: Sail the boat first, then diagnose.
- 1
Regain control under sail
If you have sea room, hoist or unfurl sail and sail the boat to keep steerage.
- 2
Check the basics
Fuel level, fuel cut-off, raw-water seacock open, and the kill cord / stop control.
- 3
Check for a fouled prop
A line around the propeller is a common cause. Look astern for ropes in the water.
- 4
Check the filters
A blocked fuel filter or air in the system can stop a diesel. Bleed if you know how.
- 5
Plan a safe outcome
Identify a safe anchorage or sailing approach. Call for assistance early if near hazards.
This is training guidance, not a substitute for professional rescue services. In a real emergency at sea, call the coastguard (e.g. VHF Channel 16) without delay.
