GDPR & Your Data Rights
Last updated: June 2026
Your Rights Under GDPR
If you are in the European Economic Area (EEA) or the UK, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) grants you specific rights over your personal data. Boat School is committed to helping you exercise those rights.
1. Right to Access
You have the right to request a copy of all personal data we hold about you. We will provide this in a commonly used electronic format within 30 days.
2. Right to Rectification
If any data we hold about you is inaccurate or incomplete, you may request that we correct or update it. You can also edit your display name and boat preferences directly in your profile.
3. Right to Erasure ("Right to be Forgotten")
You may request that we delete all personal data we hold about you. Upon verification of your identity, we will remove your account, progress history and any synced data from our servers within 30 days. Local-only data can be cleared by deleting browser storage for boat-school.com.
4. Right to Data Portability
You may request a machine-readable export of your personal data (e.g. lesson completion and quiz scores) so that you can transfer it to another service.
5. Right to Restrict Processing
In certain circumstances you may ask us to limit how we use your personal data, for example while a dispute about accuracy is resolved.
6. Right to Object
You may object to the processing of your personal data for direct-marketing or analytics purposes at any time. We do not engage in behavioural advertising, so this right is primarily relevant to any optional course-reminder emails.
7. Lawful Basis for Processing
We process personal data on the following lawful bases:
- Performance of a contract: providing the course and simulator to registered users.
- Consent: optional analytics and marketing communications (you may withdraw consent at any time).
- Legitimate interests: improving our educational content and ensuring platform security.
8. Data Controller
The data controller for Boat School is Boat School Ltd. For any GDPR-related requests, contact our Data Protection Officer at dpo@boat-school.com.
9. Complaints
If you believe we have not handled your data correctly, you have the right to lodge a complaint with your national data-protection authority (e.g. the UK Information Commissioner's Office).
10. Changes
We will update this page if our data practices change in ways that affect your rights. Significant changes will be communicated via email to registered users or a site banner.
