Running Aground

The keel has touched the bottom.

Remember: Stop, assess, and use the tide.

  1. 1

    Stop driving on

Reduce power immediately so you do not drive harder aground.

  2. 2

    Check for damage and leaks

Inspect the bilge for water ingress before doing anything else.

  3. 3

    Try to come off

Heel the boat to reduce draft and motor gently back the way you came.

  4. 4

    Use the tide

On a rising tide you may simply float off — be patient and protect the boat.

  5. 5

    Call for help if stuck

If on a falling tide near hazards, call for assistance early.

This is training guidance, not a substitute for professional rescue services. In a real emergency at sea, call the coastguard (e.g. VHF Channel 16) without delay.
