Man Overboard (MOB)

A crew member has fallen into the water. Every second counts.

Remember: Shout. Point. Throw. Turn.

  1. 1

    Raise the alarm

Shout 'MAN OVERBOARD' loudly so the whole crew responds immediately.

  2. 2

    Appoint a spotter

One person points at the casualty continuously and never looks away.

  3. 3

    Throw flotation

Throw a lifebuoy / danbuoy toward the casualty to mark the position and give buoyancy.

  4. 4

    Press MOB on the GPS

Mark the position electronically and note the time.

  5. 5

    Manoeuvre back

Turn the boat (e.g. a quick-stop or figure-eight) to return to the casualty, approaching from downwind.

  6. 6

    Make contact & recover

Get a line to the casualty, stop the boat alongside, and recover them aboard. Treat for cold-water shock.

  7. 7

    Call for help if needed

Delegate a MAYDAY on VHF Channel 16 if recovery is difficult or the casualty is injured.

This is training guidance, not a substitute for professional rescue services. In a real emergency at sea, call the coastguard (e.g. VHF Channel 16) without delay.
